The concept of divisional charts is unique to Hindu or Vedic astrology. It uses different divisional charts to look at different facets of human existence. For example we use Hora chart to judge potential wealth or poverty and Saptamansha chart to examine affairs related to children. Navansha chart is used to examine the planetary placement in more detail. It is also used to evaluate the spouse in a male female relationship.
What is a divisional chart?
A planet does not give identical results in the beginning, the end or intermediate positions in a sign. A planet at 1° and at 29° of a sign will behave differently. To find out this difference a divisional chart may divide a sign into any number of parts and pin point its placement in a single part. The number of divisions done to a sign give a name to the chart. If we divide a sign into four parts the resultant chart is called Chatur-ansha Chart. {Chatur= four and Ansha= part, hence Chauransha}. Similarly a chart with seven divisions to each sign is called Saptamansha chart. Saptam=seven, Ansha=part. A Navamsha chart will have nine divisions and so on… South Indian pronunciation of Ansh is Amsa.
Maharishi Parashar has laid down the use of different charts for different purposes. For ascertaining the general trend of destiny we use Chauransha, for children related questions Saptamansha is used. For questions related to spouse, Navansha chart gives great results.
Why and how did Maharishi Parashar lay down the number of divisions for each purpose is not known. It is certain to be divinely guided.
Navamsha Chart
In a Navansha chart, starting from Aries each sign is divided into nine parts, and each part is given the name of a sign. Since a sign spans 30°, each part will measure an arch of three degrees and twenty minutes. (30°/9=3°20’). The first division or Navansha is of Aries, the second of Taurus, the third of Gemini and so on. When we reach Sagittarius, we have run out of divisions and still have Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces left. These will spill over into the nine divisions of next sign Taurus. The first Navansha of Taurus will be Capricorn, the second, Aquarius and the third Pisces.
Aries divided into nine parts of 3°20’ | Taurus divided into nine parts of 3°20’ | ||||||||||||||||
1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 |
Ari | Tau | Gem | Can | Leo | Vir | Lib | Sco | Sag | Cap | Aqu | Pis | Ari | Tau | Gem | Can | Leo | Vir |
The fourth Navansha will be of Aries again and this will continue for each sign until we reach Last Navansha of Pisces.
To be continued. . . . . .
