It is quite likely that in any horoscope one or more planets will be placed in houses where they do not give favorable results. The degree of the adverse results will depend upon the strength of a planet and the houses owned by it. In this multi part article we shall take a look at Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, and discuss appropriate remedial measures. In this 14th article, we take a look at Saturn.

Saturn is an enigmatic planet and gives both good as well as bad results. He is considered a natural malefic and a strong separatist planet. Yet , when he becomes a Yog Karak planet and is placed in strength in Kendra or Trikon houses he is capable of producing huge benefits.

Problems caused by Saturn in twelve signs

Aries
This is the sign where Saturn becomes Neech (gets divested of all his good results). This placement of Saturn usually gives a dependency problem. One becomes addicted to tobacco, alcohol or drugs. Health deteriorates and in the old age becomes a nagging problem.

Taurus
Saturn in Taurus gives an attraction to a life partner older than one self. This is especially true of men. One spends recklessly and suffers as a consequence. One gets only fair weather friends who leave him when he needs them most.

Gemini
Saturn is Gemini makes one a debtor. He takes a long time to become debt free. If other planets are unhelpful this also shows imprisonment.

Cancer
Saturn in Cancer severely reduces happiness connected to mother. Relationship with father also suffers. This lack of parental warmth and happiness scars a person for life. A childhood illness also usually leaves an enduring mark on such an individual.

Leo
Saturn in Leo reduces love and cooperation from brothers, cousins and friends.

Virgo
A person with Saturn in Virgo acts emotionally and impulsively. This lack of due forethought and planning usually costs him dearly.

Libra
Libra is the exaltation sign for Saturn and he generally gives good results here. However despite his relationship with women being cordial he gets blame, opposition and infamy because of them.

Scorpio
Saturn gives excessive anger and an irritable temperament in Scorpio. People never understand how to deal with a person like that. Consequently he does not make deep friendships. Professional success eludes him.

Sagittarius
The sheer reticence of a person is often misconstrued. Saturn in Sagittarius however makes one very hardworking and persevering. Such a person climbs the ladder of success continuously. Paucity of liquid funds may bother him at times.

Capricorn
Saturn in Capricorn takes a person away from his home and this separation from family becomes a source of mental tension.

Aquarius
Alcohol, beautiful women and an innate tendency to gamble take a toll on health and finances. Such a person has his finger in too many pies and the resultant failure makes him unsuccessful and depressed.

Pisces
Saturn in Pisces causes problems connected to real estate and finance management. One lets out properties on rent and often suffers because of the tenants.

Continuation of the previous Blog on remedial measures for Venus . . .
In the case of a male horoscope if weak and/or afflicted Venus is causing obstacles in marriage or marital relationship, these three Shlok given in Atharv Ved give immediate results. The first Mantra is given below for identification purpose only. In Roman script the pronunciation doesn’t even come close to perfection.

OM AGACHCHAT AGASTYA NAM GHRIHANAMYAYATAHA
INDRASYA VRITRA-GHNO-VANVE VASAVASYA SHATKRITO

In the case of a female horoscope, if there are delays and impediments in marriage, the following Vedic Sookt recited daily speeds up the process.

AA NO AGNE SUMATIM SMABHLO GAME DIMAM KUMARIM SAHA NO BHAGEN
JUSHTA VARESHU SAMNESHU VALGUROSHAM PATYA SOBHAGAM-STAVASYE

Removal of laziness, lethargy, excessive sleep, poverty, filth and sluttish ness from life.

Ratri Sookt is a chant given in Markandey Puran and is an excellent remedy to put snap and crackle back in life. In addition to this, the recitation of Argala and Keelak given in Durga Sapt Shati every morning after a shower and clean clothes is very helpful. These chants are available on You Tube.

It must be kept in mind that during the days the female body is cleansing itself, the heavily altered aura does not allow the chanting to be effective. That is why all remedial measures are prohibited during menstruation.

If Venus is too close to Sun and everything connected to her is in decline, Aparajita Stotra given In Markandey Puran gives permanent relief if chanted everyday. This is rather a long Stotra and takes some patience to do everyday. However the labor involved is generously rewarded.

Uncontrolled sexual appetite and deviant sexual habits

There are two ways to tackle this situation. The first is to chant the Atharvarn Shiv Sankalp Sookt. The other is to wear only white clothes every morning and chant the Shukra Gayatri at least ten times. The deity to be focused is the four armed image of Shukra.

Increasing fortune and prosperity

Shukra or Venus is the representation of divine mother in the form of Goddess Lakshmi who is the consort of Lord Vishnu and holds complete sway over material wealth of every kind. The favorite Stotra of Lakshmi is Shri Sookta and is given below

या सा पद्मासनस्था विपुलकटितटी पद्मपत्रायताक्षी।
गम्भीरा वर्तनाभिः स्तनभरनमिता शुभ्र वस्त्रोत्तरीया ॥
लक्ष्मीर्दिव्यैर्गजेन्द्रैर्मणिगण खचितैस्स्नापिता
हेमकुम्भैः नित्यं सा पद्महस्ता मम वसतु गृहे सर्वमाङ्गल्ययुक्ता ॥

॥ श्रीसूक्त (ऋग्वेद) ॥

ॐ हिरण्यवर्णां हरिणीं सुवर्णरजतस्रजाम् ।
चन्द्रां हिरण्मयीं लक्ष्मीं जातवेदो म आवह ॥ १॥

तां म आवह जातवेदो लक्ष्मीमनपगामिनीम् ।
यस्यां हिरण्यं विन्देयं गामश्वं पुरुषानहम् ॥ २॥

अश्वपूर्वां रथमध्यां हस्तिनादप्रबोधिनीम् ।
श्रियं देवीमुपह्वये श्रीर्मादेवीर्जुषताम् ॥ ३॥

कां सोस्मितां हिरण्यप्राकारामार्द्रां ज्वलन्तीं तृप्तां तर्पयन्तीम् ।
पद्मे स्थितां पद्मवर्णां तामिहोपह्वये श्रियम् ॥ ४॥

चन्द्रां प्रभासां यशसा ज्वलन्तीं श्रियं लोके देवजुष्टामुदाराम् ।
तां पद्मिनीमीं शरणमहं प्रपद्येऽलक्ष्मीर्मे नश्यतां त्वां वृणे ॥ ५॥

आदित्यवर्णे तपसोऽधिजातो वनस्पतिस्तव वृक्षोऽथ बिल्वः ।
तस्य फलानि तपसा नुदन्तु मायान्तरायाश्च बाह्या अलक्ष्मीः ॥ ६॥

उपैतु मां देवसखः कीर्तिश्च मणिना सह ।
प्रादुर्भूतोऽस्मि राष्ट्रेऽस्मिन् कीर्तिमृद्धिं ददातु मे ॥ ७॥

Some other remedies

• To increase the blessings of Venus, it is a good idea to add cardamom or some other perfume to bathing water.
• Use of lime juice in water or its application on the scalp gives same results.
• Chant the following mantra 16000 times in forty days.
OM DRAM DREEM DROM SAHA SHUKRAYE NAMAHA.
• Donate the following
Silver, sandalwood, while silk, white flowers, white, white sweets, perfumes money etc.
• In a silver bowl put a white stone, camphor and sandalwood and put it in your bed room. Burning a sandalwood stick will be helpful.

Venus in Trik houses
In the 6th house, Venus gives chest troubles. In the seventh she causes dental problems, and in the 12th house her problems are related to wealth. If Venus is placed in these houses in the two signs of Saturn or in the Navansh of Capricorn or Aquarius, these problems assume special importance.

In the Trimshansh chart, if Venus goes to a sign or Navansh of Saturn, she indicates sexual desires of an unnatural kind. Traditionally accepted ways of attaining sexual satisfaction do not appeal to such individuals. Very often they are connected to sex related crimes. We are not talking here about same sex relationships.

Other placements

Venus in an Ast (combust situation - being within 12˚ of Sun) greatly loses her ability to get respect at home and in society. A male with such a Venus is generally under the thumb of his partner. He also faces difficulties in getting married. Erectile disfunction and low sperm count is also possible.

Planets falling in the second or 12th house from Sun give rise to Veshi or Vashi Yoga. In the case of Venus these Yoga generally become incapable of giving favorable results because she often becomes Ast or combust. If by any chance Sun too is weak or heavily afflicted, the problems multiply manifold. Possibility of divorce, inability to get children and separation from the life partner then become a certainty. The remedy in such cases involves strengthening of both Sun and Venus.

Moon represents the mentality and her weakness usually results in a wandering mind. If Venus becomes conjunct with such a Moon, a person becomes extraordinarily fond of comforts. He also becomes lazy and often has no idea of sticking to a schedule.

Venus with weak Mars gives a tendency for deception, lying and cheating. One hatches get rich quick schemes and doesn’t do any real work. This often nudges a person on a criminal path.

Venus with a weak Mercury can gives dreams of grandeur in which one is involved in different types of businesses. In reality it results in frittering away of energies and losses.

Conjunct with weak Jupiter, Venus gives a tendency towards being over clever. There are usually obstacles in getting married.

Venus with weak Saturn causes frequent injuries, illness and misfortunes.

With Rahu and Ketu the results emerge with greater force.

Remedies
In all remedies given below I have given the first Shlok only for identification purposes. These Stotra are long and are best read in original Sanskrit. Reading in Roman script massacres the real pronunciation and can end up doing more harm than good.

Every morning after a shower offer water in a copper pot to Tulsi (holy basil) plant. Chant the following Mantra while offering water.

OM JAYANTI MANGALA KALI BHADRA KALI KAPALINI
DURGA KSHMA SHIVA DHATRI SWAHA SWADHA NAMOSTU TE

Then recite the complete Tulsi Kavach. The first Shlok is as below

TULSI SHRI MAHADEVI NAMAHA PANKAJDHARINI
SHIRO ME TULSI PATU BHALAM PATU YASHASVINI

For a successful and prosperous married life the best remedy is the daily chanting of Saubhagya Ashtottarnam Stotra given by Dattatreya Rishi in Tripura Rahasya. The first Shlok of this Stotra is

OM KAMESHWARI KAM SHAKTI KAM SAUBHAGYA DAYINI
KAM RUPA, KAM KALA KAMINI KAMLASANA

Injuries and illness due to Venus are best removed by the recitation of Shukra Kavach. The first Shlok is

MRINAL KUNDENDU PAYOJ SUPRABHAM PITAMBARAM PRASRIT MAKSHA MALINAM
SAMAST SHASTRARTH VIDHIM MAHANTAM DHYAYET KAVIM VANCHIT MARTH SIDDHAYE

All obstacles in getting married are removed by the daily recitation of Shukra Stvaraj. The first Shlok is

NAMASTE BHARGAV SHRESHTH DAITAY DANAV POOJITE
VRISHTI RODH PRAKARTRE CHA VRISHTI KARTRE NAMO NAMAHA.

Venus written and pronounced as “waynus” in Sanskrit language means beautiful. Latin along with hundred of other Sanskrit words has plagiarized this one as well without even a thank you.

The Sanskrit name of this planet is Shukra and signifies glitter, sophistication, high fashion, perfumes and cosmetics. Venus also signifies knowledge, wisdom and happiness. Other attributes of Venus are sex, sensuality, desires and wants. She is the prime representative of male sperms. It is for this reason that weak and/or afflicted Venus causes unhappiness in relationships with the opposite sex.

Placement of Venus in a horoscope gives a clear indication of libido, reproductive strength, and expertise in love making. It also tells a lot about the availability of wholesome and nutritious food. Luxuries, comforts, social status and expensive vehicles are all gifts of a well placed Venus.

So important is Venus in daily life that during the days she is Ast or set, no marriage or auspicious ceremony can take place.

Results of Venus in various signs

Venus placed in Aries in Bharani Nakshatra generally causes an excessive attraction towards the opposite sex. Eyesight suffers and one opposes everything.

Venus in Taurus in the first half of Mrigshira gives an extravagant person who is always short of funds. Some of their pet expenditures are frowned upon by society.

Venus in Gemini gives an abnormal libido. Such a person will go to extraordinary lengths to get sexual satisfaction. The net result is unhappiness in sexual relations.

Venus in Cancer gives addiction to drugs. One also suffers due to wrong decisions taken by ancestors.

Venus in Leo gives a careless attitude and weak eyesight. One also suffers from lack of self confidence.

Venus becomes Neech in Virgo. Such a person has liaison with women of ill repute. Venus here also reduces happiness and sexual satisfaction. Eyes, ear, nose and throat related diseases never leave the person.

Venus in Libra is in her own house and generally gives good results. There is exhaustion due to over work and one spends long periods away from home. One’s dressing sense is often at variance with the prevalent trends.

Venus in Scorpio causes extreme jealously, crafty nature, indebtedness, rudeness towards women and sexually transmitted diseases.

Venus in Sagittarius gives person who is famous only because of the family connections. S/he seldom has a striking accomplishment of her own. One has many opponents and suffers on account of vehicles and livestock.

Venus in Capricorn in the case of men causes one to suffer losses due to liaison with a woman much advanced in years than him. Heart trouble and unclean behavior are some other problems connected to this placement.

Venus in Aquarius general gives an agitated mind and general failure in life. One does not get along well with neighbors.

In Pisces which is her sign of exaltation, Venus generally gives very good results. If conjunct with a malefic planet a long duration illness of a non serious nature can happen.

Kumbh 2010 - Reporting from Haridwar India

I started my Journey for my third Kumbh from Delhi on April tenth at 11.00 PM. The Delhi Haridwar highway was packed and our coach took an alternate less traveled route to our destination. We went via Bijnor and reached Haridwar at 6 AM the next day. The whole night was spent in the coach; naturally I didn’t sleep a wink.

The coach driver deposited us at a sprawling makeshift parking and it took me a while to figure out the coordinates of the Ashram where I was to stay. I however reached it without any problem and was shown the place where I would stay for the next four days.

To reduce overcrowding in the city, the state government has established a temporary township on the sandy shores of river Ganges. There are two main arterial roads and the whole township is set up on both sides of these. The township is constructed mainly from tents, tin sheets and natural biodegradable materials. The real estate has been parceled out into plots of various sizes. These have been given to religious organizations depending upon their requirements. Each plot of land has four or more water faucets and a septic tank dug in the ground. The human waste and the waste water get soaked up there. Each plot also has an electric connection and an electric meter pre-installed.

The streets have makeshift toilets every two hundred yards and water points every hundred yards. Drinking water is available 24X7, and so is electricity.

A typical dwelling place is the sandy floor covered liberally with hay. On top of that goes a thick cotton rug. On the cotton rug go the mattress and a bed sheet. Everyone sleeps on the floor.

Every organization connected to Hinduism is represented here. The smaller ones like my Ashram have accommodation for about 150 people or less. Bigger ones have several acres and contain an expansive mini township within their precinct.

There are some special institutions which provide free meals five times a day. From morning tea to breakfast, lunch, evening tea and dinner, everything is free and unconditionally given to anyone who wants it. People sit on the ground in neat lines and are served by volunteers.

The general atmosphere is of fervor, devotion and piety. There is an air of festivity too which permeates the length and breadth of this unique event.
The Fair is also a microcosm of this great and ancient country called India. People have traveled from its every nook and corner. I have people from Tamilnadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh staying in my tent. It is great fun to talk to them and really know what is going on in other parts of India. I love south Indians. They are extremely intelligent, unostentatious and polite. They are also very gentle.

Results of Jupiter in different signs

Jupiter becomes exalted in Cancer, and generally gives good results. There is however a down side to it as well. If Jupiter goes in a Navansh of Saturn – either Capricorn or Aquarius, or associates with a weak planet, he becomes the cause of a major health issue. If sun, Mars or Saturn influence Jupiter in Cancer, the extent of suffering increases.

Jupiter in Leo generally causes less than robust health. He also gives excessive anger and abrasive language which becomes the cause of much unhappiness. If such a Jupiter is influenced by Mars and/or Saturn, the above mentioned tendencies get aggravated even further. In such cases the enemies are generally hidden, and cause damage from within.

In Libra, Jupiter loses his judicious nature and perceptive abilities. Such a person is overly trusting, believes others easily and suffers because of it. His advisors are schemers and make fun of him behind his back. Relationships with the opposite sex suffer from disharmony and lack of affection.

Scorpio Jupiter makes one a showoff. Such persons take excessive pride in spending beyond their means on social and religious functions. They also suffer because of it.

Jupiter in Sagittarius or Pisces generally gives good results. However if Mars, Saturn or sun influence Jupiter, the person is a warrior of the pen and likes litigation, and debates.

Jupiter in Capricorn becomes Neech (depleted of his good qualities) and if this is not cancelled by other planets placed elsewhere in the chart, cause many problems for the individual. Neech Jupiter causes lack of faith, little success despite much effort and inability to think things through. Lack of discrimination and incapacity to control one’s temper causes complications. One suffers from lack of happiness and harmony in life and his relations with the extended family are poor. Neech Jupiter also causes marital problems and this is especially true of women born with Virgo ascendant. Such women will also experience denial of children or separation from them.

If Capricorn Jupiter is in the Navansh of Aquarius, Aries or Taurus, the things mentioned above become more aggravated.

Propitiation of Jupiter

Worship of Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Sun pleases Jupiter. He is the embodiment of Dharma or mental virtue. The best way to make him happy is to develop qualities of a strong character, truthfulness and being helpful to others.

Every Thursday, offer rice colored with Turmeric, yellow flowers, banana and sandalwood to Jupiter, and Donate Chana Dal, Ungrounded Turmeric and turmeric colored rice to less privileged people.

Every Purnima (full Moon day) observe a fast and listen to Satyanarayan Katha.
 
Brihsapati Stotra is an excellent way to please Jupiter. It is given below.
 
Rituals to promote prosperity
Since Jupiter is the planet of prosperity, it is only natural that his weakness will result in poor finances. The following Mantra chanted ten times everyday will remedy the situation.

प्रणो यच्छत्वर्यमा प्र भगः प्र बृहस्पतिः
प्र देवी प्रोत सूनृता रयिं देवी दधातु मे।।
सोमं राजानमवसे अग्निं गीर्भिर्हवामहे।
आदित्यं विष्णुं सूर्यं ब्रह्माणं च बृहस्पतिम् ।।

PRANO YACHHT-VARYAMA PRA BHAGHA PRA BRIHASPATIHI
PRA DEVI PROT SOONRITA RAYIM DEVI DADHATU MAY.

The English language does not have the intonations that Sanskrit has and so suffers because of it. It will be an excellent idea to get the original Sanskrit text of this mantra and chant that. The above is given only as an identifier.

Daily recitation of Vishnu Sahastranam with a prefix of the following Mantra for every Shlok helps sagging finances quickly.

आपदामहर्तारम् दातारं सर्व सम्पदाम्
लोकाभिरामं श्री रामं भूयो भूयो नमाम्यहं

It should be chanted 28 or 108 times everyday.

Other remedies for Jupiter
Float almonds and coconut in running water.

Offer water to Peepal tree every Thursday and Saturday while chanting the Guru mantra given above.

Vedic astrology considers Jupiter as the most powerful benefic planet amongst all nine planets. This view is now being accepted by modern science. It recognizes the fact that due to his very large size, Jupiter attracts many heavenly bodies and prevents these from slamming into the earth.

A powerful Jupiter is a great boon in any horoscope. If he is placed in benefic houses and associated with benefic planets he makes life easy. Jupiter represents knowledge, wisdom, happiness, prosperity, fame, respect and social status. It must be remembered that though Jupiter gives wealth and prosperity, it is usually not of a very high quality. Stupendous wealth usually comes through one or more Vipreet Raj Yog forming in the chart. To understand Jupiter better let us take an example of our country. The prime minister of India is a powerful man for the duration of his term of office and has more power than the wealthiest man. This is the kind of status and power (and prosperity) Jupiter gives. He doesn’t really make a man a tycoon.

What Jupiter really gives is purity of mind, thoughts and actions. He also gives freedom from many unfavorable Yog forming in the chart by destroying their negativity. It is said that just as a single lion scatters a herd of elephants, so also Jupiter placed powerfully in a Kendra Sthan (quadrant) destroys all problems occurring elsewhere in the horoscope.

Jupiter is powerful in Cancer, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Aquarius and Pisces. His favorite Nakshatra are Pushya, Magha, Anuradha, Shatbhijaj and Revati. In Vishakha Nakshatra he makes a person extraordinarily courageous, (and mostly stupidly so)

Jupiter is a massive planet and gives a detached outlook about life. He prefers to remain aloof from greed, avarice and unbridled desires. It is for this reason that Jupiter brings about a detached attitude from all things represented by the house in which he sits. In 11th and second houses one gets all monetary benefits from Jupiter but such a person will not make extraordinary efforts to make money, neither will he expect any help from his family or friends.

Jupiter in signs of different planets

In Aries Jupiter creates overt and covert enemies. People really close to the native create harm for him. Unwanted expenses pursue such an individual relentlessly. One also suffers from cuts, injuries and skin diseases. Naturally such a person has a short fuse. If Jupiter is associated with Mars, Mercury or Saturn, there is a tendency to use crooked methods.

In Taurus, Jupiter can give a long term disease. He also gives unhappiness due to the life partner. This happens because for Taurus ascendant Jupiter owns the 8th and the 11th houses. His lordship of the 8th house makes him incapable of giving any sizable financial benefit. It also negatively impacts the seventh house of marriage because from the 11th house Jupiter’s 9th aspect falls there. It must be remembered that Jupiter is primarily the 8th lord here.

In Gemini or Virgo, Jupiter becomes the lord of two Kendra Sthan (quadrants) and therefore suffers from Kendra Adhipatya Yog. His results are therefore unfavorable. One does not enjoy good relationship with colleagues as well as life partner, spouse etc. Jupiter in these signs also causes losses in a partnership. If Mars associates with Jupiter, skin diseases become a norm.

Remedial measures for Problems caused by Mercury
To propitiate Mercury, chant the following Mantra everyday in the morning either 28 or 108 times. Another very effective way is to recite the entire 1000 names of Lord Vishnu given in Vishnu Sahastra Nam Stotra. If you find it difficult to do this every day due to paucity of time, it must be done at least every Wednesday.
Padm Puran has a Stotra of 25 names of Mercury, and its daily chanting is extremely helpful in propitiating Mercury.
As mentioned above, Mercury is the planet of trade, commerce and accounting. His weakness can therefore result in shortage of finances. If you find that money does not stay in your hands for very long, chant the following Mantra from Rig-Ved at least 10 times before and after recitation of Shri Sookt.  

भूरिदा भूरि  देहि नो मा दभ्रं भूर्या भर भूरि देधिन्द्र दित्ससि। 
भूरिदा हयसी  श्रुत पुरुत्र शूर वृत्रहं आ नो भजस्व राधसि।।

Mercury is the planet of intellect and his affliction can results in interrupted sleep and nightmares. In such cases the chanting of the eight names of Lord Vishnu every morning, afternoon and night proves very helpful. This is taken from Vaman Puran.

Badly placed Mercury can cause stage fright and inability to express oneself freely. Daily recitation of Budh Kavach removes this problem from the root by increasing self confidence. This especially true of Gemini and Virgo ascendants where Mercury becomes the ascendant Lord. 

Stammering, inability to speak clearly, attention deficit disorder and carelessness are completely removed by ten daily chantings of Kartikeya Stotra. This should be done in the morning sitting under a Peepal tree. Start when moon in Pushya Nakshatra and end when it enters Punarvasu Nakshatra after twenty seven days.  

Pimples, acne and loss of skin tone is speedily cured by chanting Sheetla Devi Mantra. This is easily found in book stores near temples.

Chant the following Mantra 9000 times in 40 days.

OM BRAM BREEM BROM SAHA BUDHAYE NAMAH and wear the following Yantra on a gold plate.
 

Keep fast for 21 consecutive Wednesdays. Start from the first Wednesday in the waxing Moon fortnight Shukl Paksh. On the day of fasting bathe, wear green clothes and recite Vishnu Sahastranam Stotra. Chant above Mantra 108X3 times. Take only one time meal without salt. Donate Halwa made from Moong Dal. Feed greens like Palak or Sarson to a cow. Donate green fruits, and yellow-green colored clothes. On the last day of fasting perform a Havan and offer Madhu-Sarpi, yogurt, and ghee along with Havan samagri to the sacrificial fire.

How to spot problems caused by weak planets and eliminate them Part VII - Mercury

It is quite likely that in any horoscope one or more planets will be placed in houses where they do not give favorable results. The degree of the adverse results will depend upon the strength of a planet and the houses owned by it. In this multi part article we shall take a look at Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, and discuss appropriate remedial measures. In this seventh article, we take a look at Mercury.

In Hindu astrology, Mercury is the planet of intellect. He rules over knowledge, speech, intelligence and cognitive abilities. Talents of problem solving and self expression also stem from Mercury. 

Mercury rules over skin, and his affliction with malefic planets like Mars, Rahu and Ketu causes some skin related disease. Weak Mercury brings about weak intellect and speech defects.
 
Mercury represents commerce and trade. Any weakness connected to Mercury makes one a poor businessman and an inadequate accountant.
 
Mercury represents Lord Vishnu and is intimately connected to Dhanishtha Nakshatra and the twelfth Tithi (Lunar Date). If the lunar date is the twelfth, and Moon occupies Dhanishtha Nakshatra, Mercury becomes powerful. 

Mercury is the only planet who retains his strength for day and night births. Mercury gives results in consonance with the planets he is placed with. His results are favorable with benefic planets and unfavorable with malefic ones. 

Weakness of Mercury can seriously impinge on the abilities connected to acting, arts, architecture, writing, accounting, speaking, intelligence, worldliness, singing and having a jovial nature.
 
Mercury and Leo
Mercury has a special relationship with Leo Ascendant. He becomes the lord of the second as well as the eleventh house. Both represent money. The second house represents accumulated wealth while the eleventh house rules over financial income. Any weakness of Mercury for Leo Ascendant therefore becomes very telling on their financial situation.
 
Mercury and Sun 
Mercury is always very close to Sun and that is why in most of the horoscopes he appears to be Ast or combust. This has no bearing on the strength of Mercury, and is one more instance of how Mercury behaves differently than other planets. 

There are two ways in which Mercury can become Ast. It can happen when he is retrograde and is ahead of Sun in degrees. In this case he gets Cheshtabal and gives good results. (all planets when ahead of Sun give better results due to Cheshtabal)

The other way for Mercury to become Ast is when he is in direct motion and is close to earth. Planets close to earth always give beret results, so either way Mercury remains insulated from the limitations of combustion or being Ast.

Mercury in Neech Rashi
Mercury becomes Neech in Meen Rashi (Pisces). His relationship with Jupiter is neutral and so his being Neech does not impact very heavily on his ability to give favorable results.
 
Mercury in Cancer
Mercury is inimical to Moon. His favorable or unfavorable results are dependent on her strength. A person born with Mercury in cancer on a full Moon day will not suffer appreciably from this placement of Mercury. A person born with Mercury in cancer on a no Moon’s day will suffer some what more.
 
Mercury in the signs of different planets
Mercury in the two signs of Mars – Aries and Scorpio – makes an individual cunning and quarrelsome.
 
In Taurus and Libra, Mercury gives a tendency to be extravagant. He also gives being a little slow on the uptake in matters connected to profession and gains. 

In Gemini and Virgo, Mercury is happy in his own signs. This results in such individuals being very fond of listening to their own praise. They usually go beyond their capacity to help other people and suffer because of it. Their overly talkative nature creates obstacles for them. They chatter nonstop and are compulsive talkers. 

Mercury in cancer causes problems due to brothers. The relationship with the opposite sex is a matter of despondency for such people. One is busy all the time in chores that are not necessary. One fritters away time.
 
Mercury in Leo causes inability to perform on promises given earlier. The reputation consequently suffers. One may suffer from loss of memory and some speech and hearing impediment also. One may also become agitated easily and be in conflict with extended family.
 
Mercury in Sagittarius and Pisces makes a person a gentle man and a kind soul. This becomes their bane as well. They suffer because of their goodness. They are wonderful financial advisors but suffer penury themselves.
 
In Capricorn and Aquarius, Mercury bestows intelligence and gentlemanliness. However such people are not very lucky and their capabilities are hijacked by unscrupulous people for their own gains.
 
In 3,6,12 houses, Mercury creates hesitation, sadness and fear. In the seventh house he reduces marital happiness.
