Indigestion - What has Vedic astrology to do with it?

A fairly large part of human race suffers from indigestion. It is partly due to wrong eating habits and partly because of a sedentary lifestyle. There is however a third component which is fundamental to it, and allows wrong eating habits and inactive life to act faster in bringing about indigestion.

That third component is the astrological cause.

What is indigestion?
Once we push the food down through our esophagus, it reaches the stomach, which performs three tasks. Firstly it is a storage space for what we ate, and secondly it mixes up the food we ate with digestive juices and hydrochloric acid produced by the stomach.

The lower part of the stomach combines the ingested food with this digestive cocktail by its muscle action. This primes the food to be broken down into smaller molecules which can be absorbed by the small intestine and used as nourishment. The third task of the stomach is to empty its contents slowly into the small intestine.

The small intestine contains a layer of muscle that enables the wall to move in a an ocean wave like movement. The wall contracts at one point and pushes the food forward. It then contracts again a little further on and repeats the process. This is called peristalsis. This movement of organ walls propels food and liquid through the system and also mixes it up with digestive enzymes from glands that empty directly into the intestine.

Two solid organs the liver and the pancreas also produce digestive juices that help in the absorption of the food. Liver produces a substance called bile which it stores in the gall bladder and pumps it into the intestines when needed. Bile acts somewhat like detergent and dissolves the fat in the food in to a liquid. This liquid is then digested by the pancreatic juices and enzymes in the small intestine.

Food travels through the small intestine and all its nutrients are gradually absorbed by our body. The waste matter then empties into the large intestine from where it is ejected periodically as fecal matter.

When the activities connected to the stomach, the small and large intestine are interrupted, or when the liver and pancreas work at less than full capacity, indigestion results.

Body parts and their astrological representatives.

In a horoscope, the first house rules over the body of the individual. The strength of the Ascendant lord determines the strength of the human body. An Ascendant lord who is strong in Shad and Vimshopak Bal, and has a high Isht Phal (desirable results) gives a strong and well formed body with all limbs and organs working at optimal level. The converse is also true. A weakness in Ascendant lord causes a disease in the body part indicated by the rising sign and the planet owning that sign.

Time Measurement In Ancient India Part II

In the previous Blog we looked at the smallest measurement of time that ancient Hindus had. This is one extreme of measurement. The other extreme is towards bigger chunks of time.

In an earlier Blog about the Yuga system we saw how Sun takes 24000 years to go around Vishnu Nabhi or the seat of universal intelligence. The point when it is nearest to the Vishnu Nabhi coincides with the middle of two adjacent Satya Yuga and the point where it is farthest from it falls between two successive Kali Yuga. Sun takes 12000 years to move from one extremity to the other and another 12000 years to move back again. Each of these period is called Daiva Yuga.

The long count Hindu calendar mentions Daiva years. Each of these years has 12 Daiva months and one Daiva month comprises of 30 Daiva days. Each Daiva day is equal to one ordinary solar year on earth.

One Daiva year therefore equals 12X30=360 Daiva days = 360 earth years.

1000 cycles of 4 Yugas = 1 day of Brahma
50 years of Brahma = 1 Parard-dham
100 years of Brahma = 1 Param

The age of the earth according to Hindu calendar is 4.32 billion years.

Time Measurement In Ancient India.

Time measurement is an extremely important component of astronomy and astrology. Without the knowledge of accurate date and time it is not possible to make an accurate horoscope. The ancient treatises on astrology and astronomy give detailed information to calculate both.

In Vedic Astrology the measurement of time is as given below.
60 Tatpara=1 Para
60 Para=1 Valipta
60 Valipta = 1 Lipta or Vipal
60 Lipta =1 Vighati or Pala
60 Vighati=1 Ghati = 24 minutes
60 Ghatis=1 Day = 24 hours.

One can see that in the Hindu system a day is divided into 46656000000 Para while in the western system, a day comprises of  86400 seconds.

Hindu calendar is based on the movement of Moon. A lunar month has 30 lunar days and is measured from new Moon to the next new Moon. Each Lunar day is called a Tithi. There are 15 Tithis in the dark and 15 in the bright half of the month.

The lunar month is constantly adjusted against creeping errors. If in a given lunar month, Sun does not change Rashi (sign), then that month is considered as an extra month. This extra month is Called Mal Maas. If however Sun traverses two Rashi (signs) between the above-mentioned period then there is a decay of one month in that year. This decayed month is called Kshay Maas.

The lunar year of twelve lunar months has only 354 days, 22 Ghati, 1 Pal and 23 Vipal. The solar month is defined as the time taken by Sun to move in one Rashi (sign). The solar months comprises of 365 days, 15 Ghati, 31 Pal and 30 Vipal. There is thus a difference of 10 days, 53 Ghati, 30 Pal and 7 Vipal between the two.

The names of the Indian months are Chaitra, Baisakh, Jyeshta, Ashadh, Shravan, Bhadrapad, Ashwin, Kartik, Margshirsh, Paush, Magh and Phalgun. As one can see there is a relationship between the names of the Nakshatra and the names of the months.

All festivals and other important events can only take place on specific lunar dates. This is the reason why all major festivals keep changing dates each year.
The dates change due to the lunar year being shorter than the solar year by about eleven days.

Hindu Vedic Astrology - How to find out if a lost article will be found or not

We often lose articles due to various reasons. It can happen due to our forgetfulness, like leaving our travel documents at the travel desk in an airport or It can happen due to someone else’s carelessness, like the time when we catch a flight for London, and our baggage travels to Paris. It can also happen due to theft when some one simply walks away with what belongs to us.

The uppermost question in our mind at that time is what will happen? Will my belongings be restored to me??

Hindu or Vedic Horary astrology has a wonderful way of ascertaining just this. A horoscope is made for the time when the question is asked from the astrologer. The chart thus cast will have the Moon occupying one of the 27 Nakshatra. This gives us a definite clue to the fate of the lost item.

Nakshatra are grouped into four categories. These are Andh-aksh, Sulochan, Madhya-aksh and Mand-aksh. The Sanskrit meanings of these name give a clue to their results.

Andh-aksh Nakshatra
Andh in Sanskrit language means blind, and Aksh translates as eyes, the name of this category thus implies that the lost item is like a blind person who can not wander far. It is therefore recovered quickly. The movement of the lost item is in the easterly direction, or it will be found in the east.
Rohini, Pushya, Uttar-Phalguni, Vishakha, Poorv-Ashadh, Dhanishtha and Revati Nakshatra fall in this first category.

Sulochan Nakshatra
Sulochan means good eyesight, and as the name suggest, the item lost under Sulochan group of Nakshatra travels far and is not recovered. It travels to the north and is neither heard of, nor recovered.
Nakshatra falling in this group are Krittika, Punarvasu, Poorva-Phalguni, Swati, Mool, Shravan and Uttar-Bhadrapad.

Madhya-aksh Nakshatra
Madhya translates as middle quality eyesight. The article lost when Moon is in one of the Nakshatra falling in this group is traced but not recovered. For example the police may arrest the person who stole your wallet but nothing can be recovered as the money has been spent and the credit cards maxed. The recovery takes place in the western direction.
Bharani, Ardra, Magha, Chitra, Jyeshtha, Abhijit, and Poorva Bhadrapad Nakshatra fall in this category.

Mand-aksh Nakshatra
Mand means poor eyesight, and so the article lost travels some distance towards the southern direction. It is found through painstaking work and is eventually recovered.
Ashwini, Mrigshira, Ashlesha, Hasta, Anuradha, Uttar-Ashadh, and Shatbhija fall in this last category.

Hindu Horary Astrology has a lot many more tools but the, method given above is a ready reckoner and gives accurate results.

The Role Of Navamsha Chart In Predictive Astrology Part II

Continuation of the previous Blog. . . . .

Navansh chart gives a great deal of information about a planet and its tendency to act.

In the chart given above, let us take a look at the professional prospects of the individual. The tenth house is occupied by Aries and its lord Mars is placed in the eleventh house along with eleventh lord Venus and second lord Sun. Mars is a Yoga Karak for cancer Ascendant. This constitutes a powerful yoga for professional and financial success. The conjunction of second, eleventh and tenth lords in the eleventh house indicates promise for great wealth.

Let us now take a look at these planets in the Navansh chart also. Here tenth lord Mars is placed in exaltation in the fourth house. The exaltation confirms that Mars will give strongly beneficial results. Mars is placed with fourth and eleventh lord Venus thus suggesting that real estate will be a contributing factor.

Venus is placed in the Navansh chart in debilitation in the twelfth house along with Rahu. This suggests that the financial gains indicated in the birth chart are emasculated, and will leak away due to various reasons.

Sun who is the lord of the second house of wealth is placed in eighth in an enemy house. Note also that sun happens to own the 11th house in the Navansh chart.

Lagna Lord Moon who is placed in the ninth house in an enemy sign is placed in the Navansh chart in debilitation. This shows a changeable nature and lack of application in the person.

What appeared as a brilliant chart loses luster due to the adverse placement of planets in Navansh chart. Fortunately Mars, Venus and Sun are still placed 5-9 to each other and this works in favor of the individual.

The results shown by the birth chart will still materialize but with a reduced intensity.

The Role of Navamsha Chart In Predictive Astrology

The concept of divisional charts is unique to Hindu or Vedic astrology. It uses different divisional charts to look at different facets of human existence. For example we use Hora chart to judge potential wealth or poverty and Saptamansha chart to examine affairs related to children. Navansha chart is used to examine the planetary placement in more detail. It is also used to evaluate the spouse in a male female relationship.

What is a divisional chart?
A planet does not give identical results in the beginning, the end or intermediate positions in a sign. A planet at 1° and at 29° of a sign will behave differently. To find out this difference a divisional chart may divide a sign into any number of parts and pin point its placement in a single part. The number of divisions done to a sign give a name to the chart. If we divide a sign into four parts the resultant chart is called Chatur-ansha Chart. {Chatur= four and Ansha= part, hence Chauransha}. Similarly a chart with seven divisions to each sign is called Saptamansha chart. Saptam=seven, Ansha=part. A Navamsha chart will have nine divisions and so on… South Indian pronunciation of Ansh is Amsa.

Maharishi Parashar has laid down the use of different charts for different purposes. For ascertaining the general trend of destiny we use Chauransha, for children related questions Saptamansha is used. For questions related to spouse, Navansha chart gives great results.

Why and how did Maharishi Parashar lay down the number of divisions for each purpose is not known. It is certain to be divinely guided.

Navamsha Chart

In a Navansha chart, starting from Aries each sign is divided into nine parts, and each part is given the name of a sign. Since a sign spans 30°, each part will measure an arch of three degrees and twenty minutes. (30°/9=3°20’). The first division or Navansha is of Aries, the second of Taurus, the third of Gemini and so on. When we reach Sagittarius, we have run out of divisions and still have Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces left. These will spill over into the nine divisions of next sign Taurus. The first Navansha of Taurus will be Capricorn, the second, Aquarius and the third Pisces.

Likely fluctuation in gold prices in December 2009.

Gold is the only everlasting standard of wealth. When stocks, bonds and their derivatives turn to dust due to war, famine or natural disasters, only gold remains. An earthquake can turn prime real estate to rubble in less than thirty seconds, and a multimillion dollar structure can become value less in no time at all. The only commodity that emerged with its value intact from the tragedy of The World Trade Center, was Gold.

When the dust settles – literally and figuratively - only one metal retains it values and that is gold. It is a highly prized metal in the east and especially so in India and China. The amount of gold hoarded away in these countries is unbelievable.

Gold is represented by Jupiter. The transit of Jupiter through 27 Nakshatra and his union with other planets has a direct bearing on gold prices. During its journey around the zodiac, Jupiter passes through the territory of friendly, neutral and hostile planets. It also forms various yoga with other planets in transit. These yoga or combinations either increase or decrease the radiated energy from the planet. This radiated energy has direct bearing on commodities connected to Jupiter. Let us take a look at what is in store in the coming months December.

Mercury enters Sagittarius on December 01 and joins Rahu who is already present there. Gold prices will therefore move north.

This is accentuated by the movement of Sun into Jyeshtha Nakshatra on December 02. This will keep the gold prices high. This trend continues until the December 10 when Venus enters Jyeshtha, and Mercury moves to Poorvashadh Nakshatra. This combined movement will drive the prices of Gold down.

The yellow metal prices rise again as Venus comes to with in 12° of Sun in Sagittarius and becomes combust.

December 15 is an important date when Sun joins Mercury and Rahu in Sagittarius. Gold prices will suddenly shoot up.

On December 18, the prices will fluctuate but end high.

Jupiter enters Aquarius on December 19 and comes under the aspect of Mars. This will push gold prices up once again. Mars becomes retrograde on December 20  and Venus moves to Sagittarius to join Sun, Mercury and Rahu. This will make gold prices shoot up.

Prices will remain some what stable after that until December 30 when gold prices will fluctuate once again.

2012 – The Mayan And Hindu Calendar- Is it the end of the world? Part IV

Continuation of the previous Blog . . . . . .

The Mayan long count calendar only talks about the end of the days which does not imply the end of the days of humanity on earth. This is a misunderstanding caused by the Biblical interpretation of the end of days meaning the end of life on earth.

End of days really means the end of systems, policies and malpractices that benefit a few while harming a multitude of humanity. In the last fifty years the so called developed nations have poured more pollutants in the eco system than the rest of the world did since the beginning of life on earth. This was done to create a life style that is in total conflict with ecology. Industrialization has overloaded the ability of earth to renew itself, and earth has responded by a slow denial of its bounties. Global warming is just one of the results of reckless and irresponsible industrialization.

Excessive reliance on cheap oil by the west has pumped millions of tons of pollutants into our eco system. The present social model where a car becomes indispensable for every human being is extremely wasteful. Oil has become an addiction which is driving the engines of war for the past fifty years. Two middle east wars were fought not only to keep cheap oil flowing to the west, but also to control access to emerging industrial giants like China and India. The present opening gambit against Iran on the chess board of middle east is a step in the same direction.

The genetic manipulation and modification of major life sustaining crops and their patenting has been going on for some time now. Genetically modified food grains can not be used as seeds for the next crop. The modification done to the grain denies it the ability to germinate. The farmer has to depend upon the company that supplies the seed for every crop.

The seeds are patented so there is no legal recourse. Genetic manipulation is a way to bring agriculture all over the world under the control of a few transnational corporations.

The problems do not end here. Genetically modified crops can affect the naturally growing crops in the vicinity. This is done by pollinating vectors like bees and other insects which carry the genetically manipulated pollen to natural crops. Over a period of time the seed obtained from natural crops will also lose its capacity to germinate. This opens the gate to the worst possible exploitation of humanity by a few corporations. Over a period of time the food resources of the world will come under the control of a chosen few nations.

The genetically modified crops are so manipulated that they are resistant to most pests and plant diseases except one or two. The company which produces the GM crop also manufactures the insecticides for that particular infestation. The insecticide is also patented. The farmer has not only to buy the seeds, he also has to buy the insecticide from the same company.

Genetically modified foods are not free from health risks either. The genes that are incorporated in the seeds come from bacteria and other sources which can manipulate the human genome and cause great harm over a period of time.

These are just a few of the problems that humans are encountering. Every one of these is the result of human greed and desire for domination. If humanity is to evolve further, these barriers must go. The end of the days thus means the end of days of exploitation of majority by a minority. It also means the end of the days of the ability to project power through violence and economic means.

To people who are strongly mired in materialism, the ideas mentioned above should appear laughable. There is no surprise there. Just fifty years before Roman civilization breathed its last, the very idea of its pending doom would be a matter of derision for most Romans. Who ever thought in1939 that Hitler would die a pitiable death in a bunker in 1945.

2012 is just three years away, and when it is over, things will never be the same again. They will be much better.

Concluded.

2012 – The Mayan And Hindu Calendar- Is it the end of the world? Part III

Continuation of the previous Blog . . . . . .

So where are we now?
At present, we are fair and square in the early phase of rising Dwapar Yuga and this is the time of rising consciousness. The evidence of it is all around us.

In recent past, Yoga and meditation have been accepted and assimilated in highly conservative societies of North America and Europe. Medical science which had so far treated the human body as an assembly of organs interconnected by plumbing is beginning to understand that there is more to our body than mere flesh, bone and gristle.

Hindu philosophy firmly believes in distributed intelligence in all organs of the body under the overall command of our mind. This was laughed away. Now with transplanted hearts, the patients and the physician are both finding out that the memories of the donor are indeed transferred along with the donated organ, and that the brain of the recipient is able to access that memory.

Hindu ideas of super-consciousness, space, time and matter are also finding slow but steady acceptance. These fundamental principles of creation were widely known in the Satya Yuga but were lost during the slow downward slide of intellect in the past Kali Yuga. Rising Dwapar is once again bringing these ideas to fore.

The humanity riding this spaceship called earth is steadily moving towards a much higher consciousness than has been imagined till now.

What about the chaos everywhere?

Time of transition is always chaotic, any one who has remodeled a home while residing there knows it! As the old gives way to new, some readjustments need to be made. Some old structures have to be dismantled so new one’s can replace these. Change is life and life is change.

What we see around us is the result of rising consciousness of humans everywhere. People and countries who have natural resources of energy and matter, and have not been paid a fair price for these are beginning to question the inequitable system.

World religions control the minds (and pockets) of vast number of people. As consciousness rises, these followers are questioning the hold of a few religious leaders over their affairs. The leaders are responding by more rigid and fundamental interpretation of the scriptures to keep their flock in line. Any one who has studied the major world religions in the recent past knows that fences have been going up everywhere.

The exploitation of world resources by the west and their use of every stratagem to maintain the status quo was successful initially but has been giving dwindling returns in the recent past. As long as a tiny minority continues to consume a major part of the resources of this world, peace can not be restored.

The economic and religious strife that envelopes the world will not go away until a fair and just system replaces the present one.

What is in store in 2012
Unlike the movie by the same name, the earth is not going to be destroyed on Dec 21, 2012. On the contrary, we are assured of an accelerated growth of spirituality and consciousness everywhere. One thing is sure though, everything that stands to thwart this process will be reduced to nothingness.

The west will lose its leadership in the world affairs. After 2012, its ability to influence world events through money or violence will be gone. The extremely wasteful economic model that the west swears by will crumble, never to rise again for next many thousands of years. Gone too will be the dream of multinational companies to control world resources at any cost and profit from it.

Some calamitous events will certainly take place but these would be more by way of course correction rather than a fundamental change of direction. Humanity will not only survive, it will thrive.

It would be wrong to call 2012 a cataclysm for humanity. In the long term it will be Calypso time.

2012 – The Mayan And Hindu Calendar- Is it the end of the world? Part II

Continuation of the previous Blog. . . .

Let us analyze what Manu says. The length of the Satya Yuga is 4000 years with a buffer of 400 years on either side. This buffer is the Sandhi or junction where the effect of one Yuga fades away and of the other begins to hold sway. The total length of Satya Yuga is therefore 400+4000+400= 4800 years.

Treta Yuga is the next Yuga to follow and using the logic mentioned above its duration turns out to be 300+3000+300= 3600 years.

The other two succeeding Yugas are Dwapar and kali and their extent works out to be 200+2000+200= 2400 years and 100+1000+100= 1200 years respectively.
The grand total of 4800+3600+2400+1200 comes to 12000 years.

Our Sun orbits around a grand center called Vishnu Nabhi, which is the seat of universal intelligence. During its journey around Vishnu Nabhi when Sun comes closest to it, Dharma becomes the driving force of humans. Our proximity to the universal intelligence allows each and everyone of us to fully comprehend the reality of this creation, and remain plugged in to universal intelligence at all times.

As Sun begins to move away, our knowledge begins to fade away in direct proportion to our distance from Vishnu Nabhi. In this way Treta and Dwapar Yuga see the steady diminishing of human intelligence until it reaches its lowest level in Kali Yuga.

As Sun moves forward in its orbit, it begins to move towards Vishnu Nabhi and once again the human intellect begins to grow. It ultimately reaches its zenith in Satya Yuga. This cycle keeps repeating itself.

The movement of the Sun away or towards Vishnu Nabhi is indicated by the equinoctial point. When the autumnal equinox is in Aries, Sun is nearest to Vishnu Nabhi, and when it is in Libra, Sun is farthest from it (Vishnu Nabhi). This refers to the position of the equinoctial point and has nothing to do with the movement of Sun through the Zodiac.

In 11501 BC the autumnal equinox was on the first degree of Aries. At this point the Sun began to move away from its position closest to Vishnu Nabhi or grand center to its position farthest from it. This movement set in motion the very slow and imperceptible decline in the mental virtue of humans. The intellectual power of man began to diminish.

In the next 4800 years we lost  the power to grasp spiritual knowledge.

In the following 3600 years during the Sun’s journey through the descending Treta Yuga the human intellect lost all power of grasping the divine magnetism.

In the succeeding 2400 years of the journey of the Sun through the descending Dwapar Yuga the intellect became more clouded and humanity lost the ability to understand the existence and nature of five electrical energies.

Finally in the last 1200 years of the Kali Yuga the intellectual power became so weak that nothing about the creation could be understood.  Only gross material level of existence was known to us.

Adding 12000 years to 11501 BC we reach a figure of 499 AD. The period around 500 AD was indeed the darkest part of kali Yuga and of the whole cycle of twenty four thousand years. Even a cursory study of the history of dark ages reveals – barring a few pockets of light - the cruelty, ignorance and animal like existence of people all over the world.

2012 – The Mayan And Hindu Calendar- Is it the end of the world?

There are a number of misconceptions regarding the approach of Dec 21, 2012. The concept of end of days commencing on this date is taken from ancient Mayan calendar. Let us take a closer look at it.

The Mayan calendar is based on the premise that Sun is not a stationary star, and that it revolves along with the solar system around a fixed point in our galaxy called the point of light. One complete orbit of Sun around this fixed point takes 25625 years. One complete cycle is called a galactic day and is divided into two halves of 12812.5 years. These are called day and night.

Mayans also divided the galactic day of 25625 into five segments of 5125 years each and assigned specific symbolism to each segment.

The first cycle was called galactic morning. This refers to the point when our solar system is just coming out of darkness and is about to enter light.

The second cycle was called mid day. During this second cycle, our solar system comes closest to the central fixed point called the point of light.

The third cycle represents afternoon. During this phase, our solar system begins to come out of the light and move away towards darkness.

The fourth cycle is the late-night, and at this point our solar system has reached furthest from the central light.

The fifth and the last cycle is the period before dawn. During this phase our solar system is in its final years of darkness before starting again. This is the cycle that we are currently coming out of.

The Hindu Vedic calendar

With only some minor variations the Hindu or Vedic calendar which predates Mayans by a few thousand years states exactly the same thing. Here is what Manu Smriti (teachings of sage Manu) says.

Four thousand years is said to be the Satya Yuga. Its morning  has as many hundreds, and its evening is of the same length. (400+4000+400 = 4800).

In the other three ages, with their morning and evening twilights, the thousands and hundreds decrease by one. (i.e. 300+3000+300 = 3600 and so on…).

That fourfold cycle comprising twelve thousand years is called an Age of the gods. The sum of a thousand divine ages constitutes one day of Brahma, and of the same length is its night. Manu specifically mentions earth years.

In our next Blog, we shall go into the simple math of it. . . . .

Medha Suktam

Medha Suktam roughly translates as intelligence enhancing hymn. It is a very ancient Sanskrit prayer whose origin is lost in antiquity. What is remarkable however, is that Hinduism has preserved this priceless heritage exactly as it was created.

The honeyed beauty of its Sanskrit verses still weave the same magic that they have for thousands of years. Mere listening to this Suktam enhances the cerebral out put by directly influencing the Medha Nadi, or the channel of intelligence.

Students, scientists, teachers, lawyers, accountants will benefit hugely from this. The rest of us will experience an increase in ability to comprehend complex issues. Children with impaired intelligence will also benefit from its vibrations.

So close your eyes and listen intently. Feel your thoughts becoming uplifted, and your discernment enhanced.

Reincarnation – What It Is, And More Importantly Does It Really exist? Part VI

We all know that new born infants display emotions from their first breath onwards. They are happy, sad and angry just like us. This happens when they are awake but it also happens when they are sleeping. This display of emotions during waking hours can be attributed to interactions with parents and siblings, but that does not explain why they should smile, cry or be scared during sleep. It certainly does not explain why a male child should have an erection at an age which is very far removed from puberty.

According to the theory of reincarnation this happens because there are traces of memories brought forward from the past life. These memories play like a newsreel producing different emotions at different times. As the infant gets enmeshed in the three dimensional world, there is a slow erasing of these trace memories.

Some infants cry all the time while some others are exactly opposite. They cry only when they are hungry or wet. This happens because they have a lot of happy memories from their adult past. While it is not set in stone, a happy childhood is a pointer to a happy life later on. It may not be a wealthy or prosperous life, but it is likely to be a happy one.

Theory of incarnation is not without its proof. In all countries, and in all cultures of this world there are people who remember their past life. These stories have been verified and they check out. Little children remember their wife and kids from past lives and even remember the geographical location of their erstwhile home in another city which they otherwise wont be able to point out on a map.

Modern science is actually quite biased against eastern traditions. It happily propagates the theoretical existence of purely imaginary entities like Pions, Gluons, Mesons and a host of such particles for which they have no shred of proof. However when it comes to the Vedic belief system, it comes out with its old criteria that anything which can not be felt and studied can not exist.

The theory of reincarnation explains why things happen in this world, and why people become wealthy or poor, healthy or sick, happy or sad. In short it explains the reason behind all dualities. It very emphatically does not propagate inaction.

A video game has a preset course of events which it repeatedly goes through unless a player takes charge of the joystick. Once that happens, the events taking place on the screen are altered. They become a combination of software programming and human action.

A similar thing happens with life too. The Prarabdh Karma is the software which we created in the past through our actions for our use in future lives. Good Karma brings good results and the reverse is true as well. A lot however depends upon what we do in this incarnation. If our Karma has handed us a lemon we can either lament or make lemonade from it. Conversely we could squander away a bountiful legacy through our immaturity.

The greatest gift of the theory of Karma and reincarnation is that for its believers, it acts as a self imposed check on negative actions in everyday life. It also controls soaring and often unrealistic expectations from self and environment. It keeps us well adjusted and happy. While it does not make saints out of every one, it keeps serious crime down. Poverty and hunger can cause petty crimes to occur but the scenarios of a gunman taking an automatic weapon and going on a killing spree in a campus are unthinkable in India. That says a lot about self check and self governance in everyday actions.

Reincarnation – What It Is, And More Importantly Does It Really exist? Part V

We saw above that as the universal spirit divides, it gets the idea of separate existence. The part that breaks away – our soul – develops a sense of identity of its own. This sense of separate identity is called ego. It is a very useful and at the same time very problematical idea. As soul gets enveloped in first the astral and then the physical body, this sense of being separate from universal spirit, helps by identifying with the human body. Ego is necessary if one is to take good care of one’s body and keep it well fed, well cared for and healthy. The problem arises when soul is fully under the control of ego and completely forgets that it is a spark of divinity. It then becomes totally enamored with the body and remains busy in catering to the new desires that spring up daily.

The soul becomes quite like an actor who is otherwise sane, but develops some oddities of character when playing the part of a schizophrenic for a long period of time. Role playing is good as long as it is an act. When role playing becomes the role itself, that is where the problems begin.

We have seen earlier that the soul in enveloped by the causal body, which in turn is enclosed by the astral body. This combination is strong, secure and inviolate. No matter what happens in the universe it sustains.

This combination is electromagnetic in nature and acts like the storage system of a computer. Every thought that we think and every action that we perform is continuously written on this media in real time. At the time of death, our physical body is destroyed but a record of our activities is carried forward stored securely on this media.

The Karmic data that we generate is huge and can not be expended in one lifetime. It keeps getting accumulated and is called Sanchit Karma. (Sanchit literally translates as accumulated)

A small portion of Sanchit Karma which can be worked out in a single life time is called Prarabdh Karma. It is this small portion that decides what kind of a life we shall have. If we have caused anguish and misery to people, we shall be presented with circumstances where we shall receive identical treatment from them to know by first hand experience that hurting others is bad.

The happiness that we spread and the joy that we gave to people will be rewarded as well. It will come to us in the form of sound health, peace and prosperity.

Prarabdh Karma is basically a software program which becomes operational with the fertilization of the egg. The soul that enters the vehicle thus created will decide the looks, personality, health and other parameters of the life of the infant that comes out of the womb at the end of the pregnancy.

The human genome has genes that decide the structure of the body and its appearance. These genes are switched on or off by the Prarabdh Karma to give a shape and personality to the individual. If an individual is to suffer the loss of a limb or sensory organ from birth onwards, the software will stop the growth of related organ right from the beginning. The software also controls the genes that decide, skin color and skin tone, height, health etc. In short it controls every aspect of our body and mind.

Some people are bright and sunny while some others are gloomy and pessimistic. It depends upon our brain chemistry and this too is decided by the Prarabdh Karma we have brought forward from previous life.

Reincarnation – What It Is, And More Importantly Does It Really exist? Part IV

Continuation of the previous Blog. . . .

How does reincarnation work?
For us to understand the mechanics of reincarnation we have to define two more terms. The causal and the astral body. Let us do this now.

Causal body
If we take a drop of water from the ocean and chemically analyze it, it would be identical in every way with water in the ocean. There is however one difference. The drop has now an identity of its own. It is no longer an ocean, it’s a drop. It is bound by the laws of physics which give it its shape. It is important to remember this point.

When the universal spirit or God divides itself into smaller parts, each part become a soul, and like an ocean drop, it resembles the universal spirit in every way. There is one important difference though, the soul being a conscious entity, develops the idea of a separate existence.

Just as an ocean drop is bound by laws of physics like gravity and surface tension, the soul too is bound by certain forces. Five different types of electrical energies bind the soul and give it the idea of a separate existence which is different and removed from universal spirit. Despite this the soul has all the qualities of universal spirit. In Sanskrit it is called “Karan Sharir “ as it is the underlying cause for the emergence of the known universe.

Causal body is purely an energy form. The five different electrical energies form the basis of five organs of cognition in the animal kingdom including humans. This happens in the next step of development.

Astral body

Astral body is electro magnetic in nature and is a step forward in the evolution of life from pure energy. The five energies that bind the soul, give rise to five organs of cognizance, five organs of action and five more of the objects that will be recognized by the senses and acted upon by our limbs. The Sanskrit names for these are Gyanendria, Karmendria and Tanmatra.

By Gyanendria, or five organs of recognition we mean the senses of sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste.

Karmendria or the five organs of action are the organs of locomotion or feet. Organs of manual skill or hands, organs of speech, organs of nutritional intake and organs of excretion.

Tanmatra are the objects of the sense of smell, taste, sight, touch and sound which get united with the organs of action to satisfy our desires.

When we eat an apple, our eyes and nose (Gyanendria) recognize the red fruit as apple (Tanmatra), our mouth (Karmendria) chews and tongue (Gyanendria) confirms the taste as apple. Our brain then combines and
synthesizes all these inputs, the resultant feeling satisfies our desire which is usually hunger and taste driven. We can also define this process as below.

Tanmatra are recognized by Gyanendria and neutralized by Karmendria to satisfy the desire of the heart.

These five organs of recognition, five of action and five of the objects of these actions constitute fifteen of the seventeen parts that make the “Suksham Sharira” or astral body.

We shall talk about the two missing parts in the next Blog.

Reincarnation – What It Is, And More Importantly Does It Really exist? Part III

Continuation of the previous Blog. . . .

We see this everyday around us. In a dysfunctional marriage, one partner suffers physical and emotional abuse for years without thinking of leaving, then one day wakes up and leaves for good. The question is why wasn’t this done right after the abuse began? Why did he/she have to wait? The answer again lies in the Karmic theory. The hurt that was endured in this life was the exact equivalent of what this person had dished out to the brutal partner in the past incarnations. The accounts were just getting even and neither party could walk away due to myriad reasons.

We know of children who are cherished and lovingly raised by their parents. We also know of infants left in a wicker basket at a church door. They go from one foster parent to another, never realizing what parental love and affection mean.

There is sometimes a twist to this tale. Some infants are adopted by a couple who dote on them and provide them the best of everything.

Immediately after the creation of Bangla Desh in 1971, there was a huge number of infants who had been abandoned by their mothers due to social pressures. These babies were adopted by people in the west and given a very comfortable life, something that their mothers could never have imagined. These babies were never to know their biological parents because there was no Karmic quantum to be exchanged with them.

There was however a whole lot of Karma left unfinished with couples who adopted them. Since it had to be expended, adoption was the only way out and it happened.

If one asks childless couples who have adopted children in an orphanage, they all say that they were somehow strongly attracted to the child they adopted. Something drew them together. Picking up one child in a group of many may seem random, but in reality it is the attraction caused by the contract of unfinished Karma. In Sanskrit we call it “Rin-Anubandhan” and it translates as “contract of loans”. Loan refers to the unfinished Karma – whether good or bad – What it means is that the people we come into contact with, are the people with whom we have yet to expend some Karma with. We shall receive from, and give to a relationship exactly what we have received in past lives.

This endless cycle needs to be severed at some point, and that is where the forgiveness comes in. If instead of retaliating we forgive, we have stepped out of that cycle, and having absorbed and digested the initial pain emerged stronger and more evolved beings.

Breaking the cycle of birth, death and rebirth is central to the teaching of the Hindu civilization. Ashtang Yog and Raj Yog are the offspring’s of this central thought. A major portion of Ved, Puran(s) and Upanishad(s) is devoted to achieving emancipation.

Reincarnation – What It Is, And More Importantly Does It Really exist? Part II

Continuation of previous Blog. . . .

When we perform an action, it generates a good or bad feeling in the mind of a person who is the recipient of our actions. Good Karma creates happiness. Bad Karma causes pain, grief and agony in other people. Karma whether good or bad is an energy signature which can not be destroyed until it’s consequences are suffered or enjoyed in the present of future lives.

Why should there be suffering or enjoyment of past actions?

If I punched a world heavy weight champion on his nose, the retaliation will be swift. I would be knocked senseless immediately. My action would be met by an immediate reaction. I would realize by personal experience that inflicting pain is a bad idea.

There may be a different scenario where I punch him, run away and escape immediate retribution. I may elude him for a while but when he catches up with me, he will flatten me.

Let us take a case where I migrate to another country and elude detection until I die. Have I beaten the system? Not by a long shot. In this case, the champ and I shall meet again and I would be made to realize that causing pain is bad. It is quite another thing that I wouldn’t remember the incident and cry unprovoked assault.

This is a simplistic example to explain the system of Karma, but one thing is sure; the feelings of pleasure or pain that we generate for other people are brought home to us so we may realize by personal experience the advantages of making other people happy. The disadvantages of contrary action are also taught rather forcefully. In India we call the good and bad actions “Punya” and “Paap”

The following Sanskrit Shlok sums up the law of Paap and Punya beautifully in just two following lines.
अष्टादश पुराणेषु व्यासस्य वचनं द्वयं ।
परोपकार पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम ।।
In all eighteen Puran produced by Ved Vyas there are only two main thoughts. Doing good to others is Punya, doing bad to others is Paap.

The good or bad that happens to us is not God’s benevolence or punishment. It is the result of our actions performed in past lives. God does not interfere in our lives unless we fervently ask him to. When the desire to be rid of past Karma arises from our innermost being, he hears instantly and works even faster. That however doesn’t happen to most people as most of us are too busy blaming him for all the ills in our life. West says, “God moves in mysterious ways”. This is said out of ignorance because there is nothing to explain why honest people suffer so much while crooks live in the lap of luxury. God does not play favorites. For him each and every one of us is but an extension of himself. If there is disparity, it is logical to assume that there is some other cause for this. That cause is Karma.

In the west the theory of incarnation is considered a fairy tale, but if we carefully analyze our lives, we shall realize that apparent randomness of good and bad events is not random at all. There is a pattern to it. There are good times and bad times, and also times of plenty and scarcity. These phases are read accurately through Hindu or Vedic astrology. That is what predictions are all about anyway. If randomness has a pattern and that pattern can be read, then the theory of incarnation is proven.

If a horoscope can reveal the Karmic pattern from past lives and give sufficiently accurate information about relations, life partners, disease, affluence or poverty etc. then it is proven that all the people who have become our relations are those with whom we have an unfinished Karmic exchange brought over from past lives. Those unfinished exchanges will run their full course, and once finished, the person involved will either move away or die. The hurt or pleasures that we will swap with them is a way of learning valuable lessons about our actions.

Reincarnation – What It Is, And More Importantly Does It Really exist? Part I

Theory of incarnation is the foundation of Vedic or Hindu civilization, which is the most ancient and easily the most evolved of ancient societies known to us. So advanced are its tenets and teachings that only until about fifty years ago these appeared gibberish and superstition laden flight of fancy to most industrialized societies.

Hindu beliefs were termed as myths and its followers as heathens. Hindu philosophy was derisively called Hindu mythology. There is no myth in the teachings. It only lies in the mind that is evaluating it. Small minds comprehend little; a teaspoon can never contain an ocean.

Now in the post industrial and post quantum theory era, the world is slowly beginning to realize the real truth and not surprisingly it echoes the ancient beliefs of Hindu thought system.

What is reincarnation?

Theory of reincarnation says that a soul is born again and again in different bodies to go through different experiences to evolve to a level where it will become one with the universal spirit. Once it reaches that stage, there is no need for it to be born again. This merging of the soul with the spirit is called Moksha or emancipation.

What is a soul?
The universal spirit divides itself endlessly. It resides in everything that we see around us. It also forms everything else that we can only feel. There is nothing in the universe that is not a manifestation of the universal spirit or God. Soul is this tiny spark of universal intelligence that lives in all living beings. In human beings soul identifies with the human body so much that it forgets its divine origin. It becomes like a prince who has lost his memory in an accident and wakes up in a ghetto only to accept living in filth and squalor as his destiny. If he is lucky, he may one day get cured of his amnesia and return home to live a life of luxury in a palace.

Soul in its various births performs Karma which may be good or bad. Evolution of soul depends upon the actions it performs. By evolution we mean the steady increase in realization that it is a spark of omnipresence, omniscience and omnipotence; and that it is not merely a human body with limited capacity in every sphere.

What is Karma?
Every human being performs actions during her stay on earth. These actions are a mixture of selfish and altruistic. Some are based on pure greed for money, power and self glorification while some other are for wiping tears from crying eyes and bringing a smile to people who have lost all hope.
Karma is considered positive when it is done to help others without any thought of personal gain. Negative Karma is exact opposite of this and is performed every time we deliberately harm others for personal gain.
