Reincarnation – What It Is, And More Importantly Does It Really exist? Part III

Continuation of the previous Blog. . . .

We see this everyday around us. In a dysfunctional marriage, one partner suffers physical and emotional abuse for years without thinking of leaving, then one day wakes up and leaves for good. The question is why wasn’t this done right after the abuse began? Why did he/she have to wait? The answer again lies in the Karmic theory. The hurt that was endured in this life was the exact equivalent of what this person had dished out to the brutal partner in the past incarnations. The accounts were just getting even and neither party could walk away due to myriad reasons.

We know of children who are cherished and lovingly raised by their parents. We also know of infants left in a wicker basket at a church door. They go from one foster parent to another, never realizing what parental love and affection mean.

There is sometimes a twist to this tale. Some infants are adopted by a couple who dote on them and provide them the best of everything.

Immediately after the creation of Bangla Desh in 1971, there was a huge number of infants who had been abandoned by their mothers due to social pressures. These babies were adopted by people in the west and given a very comfortable life, something that their mothers could never have imagined. These babies were never to know their biological parents because there was no Karmic quantum to be exchanged with them.

There was however a whole lot of Karma left unfinished with couples who adopted them. Since it had to be expended, adoption was the only way out and it happened.

If one asks childless couples who have adopted children in an orphanage, they all say that they were somehow strongly attracted to the child they adopted. Something drew them together. Picking up one child in a group of many may seem random, but in reality it is the attraction caused by the contract of unfinished Karma. In Sanskrit we call it “Rin-Anubandhan” and it translates as “contract of loans”. Loan refers to the unfinished Karma – whether good or bad – What it means is that the people we come into contact with, are the people with whom we have yet to expend some Karma with. We shall receive from, and give to a relationship exactly what we have received in past lives.

This endless cycle needs to be severed at some point, and that is where the forgiveness comes in. If instead of retaliating we forgive, we have stepped out of that cycle, and having absorbed and digested the initial pain emerged stronger and more evolved beings.

Breaking the cycle of birth, death and rebirth is central to the teaching of the Hindu civilization. Ashtang Yog and Raj Yog are the offspring’s of this central thought. A major portion of Ved, Puran(s) and Upanishad(s) is devoted to achieving emancipation.

When we perform an action, it generates a good or bad feeling in the mind of a person who is the recipient of our actions. Good Karma creates happiness. Bad Karma causes pain, grief and agony in other people. Karma whether good or bad is an energy signature which can not be destroyed until it’s consequences are suffered or enjoyed in the present of future lives.

Why should there be suffering or enjoyment of past actions?

If I punched a world heavy weight champion on his nose, the retaliation will be swift. I would be knocked senseless immediately. My action would be met by an immediate reaction. I would realize by personal experience that inflicting pain is a bad idea.

There may be a different scenario where I punch him, run away and escape immediate retribution. I may elude him for a while but when he catches up with me, he will flatten me.

Let us take a case where I migrate to another country and elude detection until I die. Have I beaten the system? Not by a long shot. In this case, the champ and I shall meet again and I would be made to realize that causing pain is bad. It is quite another thing that I wouldn’t remember the incident and cry unprovoked assault.

This is a simplistic example to explain the system of Karma, but one thing is sure; the feelings of pleasure or pain that we generate for other people are brought home to us so we may realize by personal experience the advantages of making other people happy. The disadvantages of contrary action are also taught rather forcefully. In India we call the good and bad actions “Punya” and “Paap” 

The following Sanskrit Shlok sums up the law of Paap and Punya beautifully in just two following lines.
अष्टादश पुराणेषु व्यासस्य वचनं द्वयं ।
परोपकार पुण्याय पापाय परपीडनम ।।
In all eighteen Puran produced by Ved Vyas there are only two main thoughts. Doing good to others is Punya, doing bad to others is Paap.

The good or bad that happens to us is not God’s benevolence or punishment. It is the result of our actions performed in past lives. God does not interfere in our lives unless we fervently ask him to. When the desire to be rid of past Karma arises from our innermost being, he hears instantly and works even faster. That however doesn’t happen to most people as most of us are too busy blaming him for all the ills in our life. West says, “God moves in mysterious ways”. This is said out of ignorance because there is nothing to explain why honest people suffer so much while crooks live in the lap of luxury. God does not play favorites. For him each and every one of us is but an extension of himself. If there is disparity, it is logical to assume that there is some other cause for this. That cause is Karma.

In the west the theory of incarnation is considered a fairy tale, but if we carefully analyze our lives, we shall realize that apparent randomness of good and bad events is not random at all. There is a pattern to it. There are good times and bad times, and also times of plenty and scarcity. These phases are read accurately through Hindu or Vedic astrology. That is what predictions are all about anyway. If randomness has a pattern and that pattern can be read, then the theory of incarnation is proven.

If a horoscope can reveal the Karmic pattern from past lives and give sufficiently accurate information about relations, life partners, disease, affluence or poverty etc. then it is proven that all the people who have become our relations are those with whom we have an unfinished Karmic exchange brought over from past lives. Those unfinished exchanges will run their full course, and once finished, the person involved will either move away or die. The hurt or pleasures that we will swap with them is a way of learning valuable lessons about our actions.

Theory of incarnation is the foundation of Vedic or Hindu civilization, which is the most ancient and easily the most evolved of ancient societies known to us. So advanced are its tenets and teachings that only until about fifty years ago these appeared gibberish and superstition laden flight of fancy to most industrialized societies.

Hindu beliefs were termed as myths and its followers as heathens. Hindu philosophy was derisively called Hindu mythology. There is no myth in the teachings. It only lies in the mind that is evaluating it. Small minds comprehend little; a teaspoon can never contain an ocean.
 
Now in the post industrial and post quantum theory era, the world is slowly beginning to realize the real truth and not surprisingly it echoes the ancient beliefs of Hindu thought system.

What is reincarnation?
Theory of reincarnation says that a soul is born again and again in different bodies to go through different experiences to evolve to a level where it will become one with the universal spirit. Once it reaches that stage, there is no need for it to be born again. This merging of the soul with the spirit is called Moksha or emancipation.

What is a soul?
The universal spirit divides itself endlessly. It resides in everything that we see around us. It also forms everything else that we can only feel. There is nothing in the universe that is not a manifestation of the universal spirit or God. Soul is this tiny spark of universal intelligence that lives in all living beings. In human beings soul identifies with the human body so much that it forgets its divine origin. It becomes like a prince who has lost his memory in an accident and wakes up in a ghetto only to accept living in filth and squalor as his destiny. If he is lucky, he may one day get cured of his amnesia and return home to live a life of luxury in a palace.

Soul in its various births performs Karma which may be good or bad. Evolution of soul depends upon the actions it performs. By evolution we mean the steady increase in realization that it is a spark of omnipresence, omniscience and omnipotence; and that it is not merely a human body with limited capacity in every sphere.

What is Karma?
Every human being performs actions during her stay on earth. These actions are a mixture of selfish and altruistic. Some are based on pure greed for money, power and self glorification while some other are for wiping tears from crying eyes and bringing a smile to people who have lost all hope.
Karma is considered positive when it is done to help others without any thought of personal gain. Negative Karma is exact opposite of this and is performed every time we deliberately harm others for personal gain.
