Retrograde planets in Hindu Vedic Astrology

 

Retrograde planets are those planets that appear to move backwards. Except Sun and Moon, all planets including Rahu and Ketu have retrograde motion from time to time. Rahu and Ketu mostly have backward motion compared to others but during retrogression they appear to move forward like other seven planets.
In reality, the planet is not moving backwards only appearing to do so. We can relate it to the experience when we overtake a slow moving car on a highway. As we accelerate past the car, it appears to be moving backwards even though it is not. This illusion can be compared to retrogression.

All planets give their best results when away from Sun. Proximity to Sun reduces their beneficial effects. When they come within 12° of Sun they are called Ast or combust. Such planets lose all capacity for doing good.
Astronomically, retrogression of a planet can happen only when it is closest to earth (and farthest from Sun). Since a retrograde planet is closest to earth its effect on life on earth is at its peak. This is why in Vedic astrology a retrograde planet is given the same importance as an exalted planet (Uchha Grah).

Mantreshwar the celebrated writer of Phaldeepika opines that a retrograde planet gives the results of an exalted planet even when it is placed in an enemy sign or sign of debilitation. Saravali differs somewhat and stresses that malefic retrograde planets cause fruitless journeys, miseries and aimless wanderings. This can be the subject of a research because the Cheshta Bal of a planet is maximum when it is retrograde.

It is seen that a Retrograde Yog Karak Saturn gives very good results during its Dasha-Bhuktis. However if Saturn is placed in Lagna, its results can be quite unfavorable. Retrograde Jupiter and Mercury in Lagna will give good results. Retrograde Venus in the fourth house will also give better results.
Retrograde planets give their results from the house they are placed in but they also give their results from the preceding house as well. For example if Retrograde Jupiter is placed in the seventh house then he will give the results of being placed in the sixth house as well.

For the results of a house to be available, it is essential that the Dasha or Bhukti of that house lord be going on. The Dasha or Bhukti of a planet associated or aspecting that house lord will also bring about the desired results. These results will however be available only when Jupiter and Saturn have both aspected the house or the house lord with in a period of one year either in the direct or retrograde motion. Jupiter blesses an event and Saturn gives the permission for it to happen. When all these conditions are met the event occurs.


If a retrograde planet is placed in its exaltation sign, it ceases to give its exalted results and begins to act as a planet in fall.
The Bhukti of a retrograde planet in the Maha Dasha of Rahu or Ketu, usually brings about the restoration of losses incurred earlier. Money given as loan and written off as a loss may be recovered during this period. Same is true of the Maha Dasha of a retrograde planet and Bhukti of Rahu.
In Prashna Shastra or Horary astrology, retrograde planets play a different role. If a retrograde planet closely aspects Lagnesh or Karyesh, it leads to failure of the Prashna. If the aspect is not close on Lagnesh or Karyesh, it indicates hindrances for the person asking questions.
If the retrograde planet is a benefic and lord of fifth or ninth house in the Prashna chart, and it is related somehow to Lagnesh or Karyesh it indicates the repeat of an action or process. In a marriage alliance it can indicate a renewed vigor after some cooling period. It usually leads to successful completion.
If a malefic planet becomes the lord of an auspicious house the events mentioned above will happen but with obstacles and mental tension.
Whether benefic or malefic, ownership of sixth, eighth or twelfth houses by retrograde planets is unfavorable. If they own these houses they should not be related in any way to Lagnesh or Karyesh.

Love prospects for Pisces Ascendant.

For Pisces, the seventh house which is ruler of male female relationships in a horoscope is occupied by Kanya Rashi (Virgo).

Virgo is the sign of exaltation of planet Mercury. The strength of the seventh Bhava and Mercury thus have a major say in the happiness available from relationships and marriage. If Mercury is strong it gives a great deal of happiness in life due to two reasons. Firstly it guarantees a youthful, good looking, mature, and well settled partner. Secondly it gives general happiness, real estate and comfort of fine vehicles. Mother plays an important role in the life of such an individual. Mercury placed in the fourth or seventh house will give excellent results. In the fourth house he is strong by virtue of being placed in his own house. In the seventh house he is exalted and his beneficial results increase manifold.

Mercury becomes ‘Neech’ in Lagna and unless there is Neech Bhang, relationship or marriage will be adversely affected.

Mars and Mercury are strong enemies to each other. For a happy marriage, Mars must not influence the fourth or the seventh house and their lord Mercury. Mangal Dosh for Pisces Ascendant gives decidedly bad results by causing injury to the partner. Mars would be best placed in the second or ninth house where his capacity to do mischief is limited. In the eleventh house – the place of it’s exaltation it will cause severe problems connected to children. This happens because it will occupy the fifth house from the seventh and cause injury to the wife’s reproductive system. Its exalted aspect on the fifth house of the native will cause self-abortions to the partner.

For men, Venus becomes the Karak or significator for marriage. For Pisces ascendant, Venus is a bad planet because she owns the eighth house and becomes a confirmed representative of the eighth house and every negativity it represents. Exalted Venus (in Lagna) will halt all progress in life and is very bad news indeed. Venus should be away from fifth, ninth, tenth and eleventh houses.

For women, Jupiter becomes the Karak for husband and the male children. Jupiter in Lagna, fourth and tenth house will give very good results. Jupiter needs to be free from all malefic influences.

The seventh house of male female relationships in any horoscope is the arbiter of happiness or sorrow in relationship and marriage. The seventh house in a Capricorn birth chart is occupied by Cancer. The strength of the seventh house and its lord Moon will have a great impact on all unions in life.

Moon represents the mind and emotional nature. Moon is a highly changeable planet and changes its size on a daily basis. Cancer is a Char Rashi (movable sign) and also represents change. Relationship with a Cancer born therefore is not very unpredictable.

To be strong, Moon needs to be either in her exaltation or in her own sign. Moon placed in the fifth house in Taurus will give good results pertaining to spouse because of two reasons; firstly because she is exalted and secondly because she is placed in the eleventh house from the seventh. Such a placement will give a good deal of wealth and prosperity.

Moon placed in the seventh house is not so welcome because even though she is in her own sign, she makes one narrow minded, sociable but easily aroused to jealously. If Moon is strong in Paksh Bal, one comes from a high family. A waning Moon gives constant rift with opponents.

For female Capricorns, Jupiter becomes the significator of marriage. He also becomes the lord of third and twelfth houses. Both are Trik (bad) houses. Sagittarius, the Mool Trikon Rashi (primary sign) falls in the twelfth house, the other Rashi Pisces, falling in the third house. Jupiter becomes exalted in the seventh house. His placement there will negatively impact the marriage.Jupiter should be strong but not exalted for best results.

For males, Venus becomes the significator of marriage. Venus is a Yog Karak for Capricorn and her placement in the fifth house will give great wealth. This advantage will be lost in the tenth house because Venus has no Dik Bal in the tenth house. Such a Venus will promote the marriage to a great extent.

The actual placement of planets will greatly modify the good and bad results but this theoretical analysis will hold true.

Saturn, Venus and Moon become important planets for Capricorn born and all three can be strengthened by wearing Blue Sapphire, Half Carat solitaire and a large pearl.

The bird and bull story.

Here is an interesting story I read many years ago. It has remained stuck in my memory as it has some very practical lessons for me.
 
Once there was a bird that got left behind during the winter migration. She started late and lonely on her long journey to warmer climes. The flight was long and tiring and it was very cold. Soon it was snowing and the bird started to lose height. She flew lower and lower until she was exhausted and finally crashed to the ice-covered ground in a pasture.

She was almost frozen and would have died had a bull grazing next to her not decided to empty his bowels just then. As the poop fell on her, she was enveloped in its warmth and began to thaw. In her delirious state the bird imagined she was in heaven and started to sing with joy. Just then a hungry cat who was passing nearby heard her song. In a trice the cat extricated the bird from the poop and ate her.  

This story has three morals.  

People who poop all over you need not be your enemies.
 
People who take you out from shit need not be your friends. And most importantly,
 
When in deep shit keep quiet.  

So next time you are in trouble and start a prayer think of all the ramifications first. What ever is happening is happening for a reason and should be allowed to take its course. Develop a thick skin and wait it out. Intervene only if it becomes a matter of great concern. Even then wait a little more. Patience has a virtue all its own.

Love prospects for Sagittarius Ascendant

When studying the love and marriage prospects of a birth chart, the seventh house becomes the most important house. The strength of the seventh house and its lord gives detailed information about how happy or sad will the relationships be.

In the case of Sagittarius Ascendant, the seventh house is occupied by Mithun Rashi (Gemini Ascendant). Mercury which owns Gemini also rules over Kanya Rashi (Virgo) which falls in the tenth house. Mercury thus rules over the seventh house of relationships and the tenth house of professional success, social status and ruling powers.

It can be said that strong Mercury will be instrumental in giving marital happiness and a successful career.

Mercury should be free of any association with arch enemies Mars and Ketu. It must be kept in mind that for Gemini and Virgo ascendants Mars always becomes a Marak or a killer planet.

The best place for the Mercury to occupy will be in the tenth house where he attains exaltation in Virgo. His placement in the seventh house will also be very beneficial; the added advantage being a youthful looking face and body.

Manglik Dosh becomes a little bit more of a problems for Sagittarius born as any aspect of Mars on the seventh house/seventh lord creates health issues for the partner.

In any horoscope the placement of the seventh lord in the second house is a problem. What it essentially means is that the ascendant lord of the partner has gone to the eighth house which is bad for partner’s health and married life. Mercury should also not be placed in the sixth house as that too reduces marital happiness.

Mercury placed in the fourth house will become Neech and one must carefully look at all the possibilities of the Neechbhang Yog.

For male horoscopes, Venus becomes the Karak or significator of marriage and sexual happiness. Venus owns two houses of injury (sixth and eleventh) for Sagittarius born – the Mool Trikon Rashi (primary) Sign falling in the eleventh house. If strong, Venus will give buoyant finances. Weak Venus will give poverty. If very weak there can be problems connected to semen and sperms.

For females Jupiter becomes the significator of husband and male children. Jupiter is the Lagna Lord for Sagittarius and his strength will give a healthy body and all types of happiness. One would be fortunate in terms of motherly love, real estate, fine vehicles and general happiness. Saturn must not aspect or associate with Jupiter. Saturn in second or third house will give good results.

Sagittarius born will benefit from propitiation of Jupiter, Mars and Sun as all three are key planets for them

The seventh house rules over relationships and marriage in a birth chart. The strength and tendency of the seventh lord decides to a great extent the extent of happiness available to a person.

The Rashi (sign) falling in the seventh house in the case of Scorpio ascendant is Taurus which is ruled by Venus. If Venus is strong and favorable, the partners will be attractive, sexy and elegant. This happens because Venus is a planet of beauty, refinement, elegance and sophistication.

Venus becomes exalted in Pisces and if placed in the fifth house gives excellent results. The person gets married early. The partner in such a case is from an affluent and well to do family. The spouse is mature and an asset to the native. Since Venus is a female planet and placed in the house of children, her tendency will be to give predominantly female issues.

Venus should not be placed in her Neech sign, nor should she be influenced by Rahu or Ketu. Weakness of Venus will deny children. If severely afflicted, the issues to the wife will be through adulterous conduct.

Venus placed in the twelfth house will give adulterous conduct on the part of native as the seventh house of relationships and the twelfth house of sexual activity are both rules by Venus and the Mool Trikon Rashi (primary sign) falls in the twelfth house.

For male Scorpio, Venus becomes the Karak or significator of wife. The fact that Venus becomes the seventh house lord and Karak simultaneously means that any malefic effect on Venus will have deleterious effects on the health of the wife.

For females, Jupiter becomes the Karak for husband and male children. A strong Jupiter will give excellent results pertaining to husband and sons. In addition to this since Jupiter is the lord of second and fifth houses, he will bring a good deal of wealth and a strong ability to give sound advice to their husbands. Exalted Jupiter will lift both male and female Scorpios from a humdrum existence to prominence. Jupiter owns the second house which is the eighth from the seventh and gives a healthy and long life to the wife.

Scorpio born will benefit from propitiation of Mars, Venus and Jupiter.A five carat blood red coral in a silver ring on the ring finger of the right hand will prove very beneficial. Jupiter can be boosted by wearing a five carat Yellow Sapphire in a gold ring on the index finger of the right hand.
